The Distinguished Lecture is named for Roger L. Shidler (UW Law class of 1924), a founder of the law firm Shidler, McBroom, Gates & Lucas (now K&L Gates). Through the years, the firm grew to become one of Seattle’s most vibrant and influential law practices. To celebrate Roger Shidler’s legacy, this series brings outstanding academics, judges and practicing lawyers to UW Law to discuss leading issues in intellectual property law, an ever-more important economic driver for our region and the global economy.

This year's Shidler Lecture will be presented by Erich Andersen, global general counsel for ByteDance Ltd., which owns one of the world's most popular and talked about mobile applications today: TikTok.
With more than 100 million users in the United States alone, TikTok is a rapidly growing platform that has delighted consumers while raising security concerns with the U.S. government. Andersen will take a deep dive into the issues and survey the legal landscape the company is navigating today.

Erich Andersen is global general counsel for ByteDance Ltd., owner of the hugely popular short-form mobile video application TikTok. Erich presides over the company's international legal affairs and works with company leaders and external stakeholders on issues at the intersection of law and technology. Erich also leads the company's work on U.S. national security legal challenges.
