Health Law is a dynamic and growing legal practice in the United States and around the world. The University of Washington School of Law has an outstanding core faculty and group of practicing attorneys who teach over thirty courses and seminars in health law. We offer one of the largest and most specialized offerings of health law classes in the nation. New courses are frequently added to keep our students competitive and up-to-date.

LL.M. students can also draw on the strengths of the university’s internationally recognized School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance to personalize their focus in law. The Health Law LL.M. provides students access to a highly rated law school and an unparalleled multidisciplinary approach to learning.

The UW School of Law Experience

Our broad contemporary curriculum allows students to focus their studies in one of the following concentrations:

  • U.S. Health Law and Policy
  • Global Health and Justice
  • Genomics and Biotechnology

Alternatively, students may create a custom focus in their area of interest or sample classes across the three concentrations. Students work with faculty advisors to create a program of study designed to help realize their career goals.

Students may also be able to work with professors on cutting edge research projects or grants. Most of our health law faculty have concurrent appointments in the public health, global health or medical schools on the UW campus.

Health Law in Seattle

The Seattle metropolitan area is home to large medical, biotechnology, global health and biomedical communities. As the only Health Law LL.M program on the west coast, our students have rich opportunities for learning, research and practical experience. Over 50 global health organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and PATH, are located in Seattle.

Our Students

While some of our students have years of legal experience and want to change practice sectors, others are recent J.D. graduates seeking the specialty credentials that will launch their career.  Many others use the program as a way to transition when moving to Seattle, taking advantage of the opportunity to gain local contacts, experience, expertise and local references.

Our international students, who come from an increasingly diverse group of countries, are often sponsored by their governments or law firms. International students who complete their LL.M. may sit for the Washington State Bar exam if they meet the necessary requirements.

Beyond Coursework

A dedicated career counselor, with strong ties to the northwest health law community, works closely with each of student.  Our career counselor connects students to outstanding externship and internships and facilitates introductions to attorneys working in students’ areas of interest. Health law LL.M. students are also provided with mentors from the health law community.
