Health Law is a dynamic, growing and specialized legal practice. The University of Washington School of Law has an outstanding core faculty and many health law lawyers of national repute teaching over 30 health law courses. We add new, practical courses every year to address hot issues and provide our students with knowledge needed in the legal market.
The strengths of our internationally known schools of medicine, public health and public policy are available to our Health Law LL.M. students so they can enjoy a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to learning. Students have the opportunity to focus their studies in one of the following concentrations:
- U.S. Health Law and Policy
- Global Health and Justice
- Genomics and Biotechnology
Alternatively, students may work with our faculty to create a custom focus on their area of interest.
Our Health Law LL.M program has a dedicated career counselor and very strong ties with the health law community in the northwest. Our students can obtain practical experience at one of the many area hospitals, non-profits and for-profit health organizations by doing a Health Law Practicum or Internship. This opportunity to work and learn from practitioners can result in excellent contacts and strong references that will enhance a student’s career options upon graduation.
While some of our students have significant practice experience and are seeking to change practice sectors, others are recent J.D. graduates seeking the specialty credentials that will launch their career. Our international students, who are often sponsored by their governments or law firms, bring their own interesting backgrounds to the mix. International students who complete their LL.M. may sit for the Washington State Bar exam if they meet the necessary requirements.
The Seattle metropolitan area has a vibrant economy and large medical community. Seattle is known as an attractive place to live and was recently named by the National Jurist (Winter 2016) as one of the best places for young lawyers to practice.
For more information, all students should review the Center for Law in Science and Global Health.
According to the National Jurist, Seattle is one of the best cities in the country for young attorneys.
