Ramón E Ortiz-Vélez is a Visiting Lecturer and Managing Director for the Tax Clinic. He teaches Business Organizations. Before his current position at the University of Washington, he was the Director of Experiential Learning, Director of the Federal Tax Clinic, and Senior Lecturer at the University of South Dakota School of Law where he taught courses in tax, military and national security law, criminal law and procedure, law office management, and others. He was also a lecturer at the University of Montana’s Baucus Institute China Summer Study Abroad Program, where he taught Comparative Business Organizations and International Business Transactions at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) in Chongqing and the China Youth University of Political Studies’ School of Law in Beijing.
Prior to joining the University of South Dakota, he lectured at the University of Washington School of Law, teaching the Tax Practicum. In addition, he conducted bankruptcy, tax, and immigration law seminars as part of the Limited License Legal Technician Program.
As a practicing attorney, he was a founding member of Ortiz Gosalia, PLLC; his practice centered in national and international tax and business law, complex estate planning, and immigration. He also served as labor contracts negotiator and was the Director of Port Security for one of the largest ports in North America. In his prior career, he worked for various United States agencies and departments both at home and abroad and served in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force.
