American Association of Law Libraries Honors Professor Penny Hazelton with 2015 Gallagher Award

undefined The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) announced this month that Penny A. Hazelton, professor of law and associate dean for library and technology services at the University of Washington (UW) Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library, has received AALL’s highest honor, the 2015 Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award.

Established in 1984 to acknowledge sustained service to law librarianship, exemplary association support, and outstanding professional literature contributions, the Gallagher Award is presented to individuals who have completed or are nearing completion of an active professional career.

A former assistant librarian for research services and acting director at the library of the U.S. Supreme Court, Hazelton now serves as the faculty business manager for the student journals at UW School of Law and director of the law librarianship program at the UW Information School, where she is an adjunct professor. She served as AALL president in 1991 and has been the general editor of Specialized Legal Research since 2001.

"Winning the Gallagher Award is especially meaningful to me since Marian Gallagher was my teacher and mentor," Hazelton said. "Serving as the law library director for 30 years in the law library named after her has been a rich and rewarding experience. From 'Mrs. G,' I learned that contributing to law librarianship through AALL was a way to pay forward to the profession I love. I will continue to educate and train new law librarians with the values I learned from ‘Mrs. G.’” Hazelton is one of four AALL members to be honored with the Gallagher Award this year. Additional recipients include: Timothy L. Coggins, law professor and associate dean for library and information services at the University of Richmond School of Law Library in Richmond, Virginia; Sarah G. Holterhoff, associate professor of law librarianship and government information/reference librarian at the Valparaiso University Law School Library in Valparaiso, Indiana; and Sarah K. Wiant, professor of law at the Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Virginia.

The 2015 Gallagher Award recipients will be recognized for their contributions at the 108th AALL Annual Meeting & Conference, to be held in Philadelphia from July 18-21, 2015.
