Inaugural Taricani Lecture: All Shook Up

Musicologist Judith Finell will discuss the challenges posed to the intellectual property rights of composers and performers in light of today’s transformative technology. The barriers removed by increasing access to musical composition and production tools, and the ability to share and distribute music while bypassing the established music industry gate keepers, have both democratized and threatened creative works. The very definition and value of originality have been questioned. Judith Finell will discuss some of the milestone music copyright infringement cases in which she has served as an expert witness, as well as commenting on the growth in musical expression made possible by new technology.
